Melanie Jade Goldstein Signs With Jefferson University

Written by Elisa Selamaj

Some students have their lives and careers planned out since elementary school; others just go through their days awaiting a life-changing opportunity to come their way. Melanie Jade Goldstein, Lower Moreland High School senior, experienced such an opportunity after committing to and signing with Thomas Jefferson University on Monday, November 20th to play lacrosse throughout her college career.

Melanie began playing lacrosse as a freshman in high school after hearing about it from several of her friends and soccer teammates. While Melanie had no lacrosse experience prior to high school, her extensive experience as a soccer goalie motivated and prepared her for the position of a lacrosse goalie. Once she began playing lacrosse for Lower Moreland High School, Melanie fell in love with the sport so much so that, in her junior year, she began to base college search around future lacrosse opportunities. Melanie plays lacrosse for the high school during the winter and spring, and she plays for the STEPS Philly club throughout the summer. Her favorite thing about lacrosse is the indescribable rush that she gets from playing and saving goals. She also loves the bond that she has formed with her teammates and coaches over the past four years.

Melanie’s journey as an athlete throughout her high school career has not only helped to build her character, but also earned her several humbling recognitions. Melanie’s lacrosse coach, Jessica Ashenbrenner, says, “Starting in goal her freshman year, Melanie acclimated to a new sport quickly, taking the lead on defense with a save percentage of 56.9% and earning Varsity MVP. . . During Melanie’s sophomore season, she also earned BAL Honorable Mention and then last year, Mel earned 1st Team.” Melanie’s outstanding performance in the past three years has certainly jump-started her career as a collegiate athlete. Mrs. Ashenbrenner also adds that “Mel is smart and aggressive in cage and will be an asset to Jefferson University.” Outside of sports, Melanie also has a rigorous academic schedule including multiple honors and AP courses. Some of Melanie’s hobbies outside of school are playing soccer and doing martial arts. Melanie also has part time jobs at Franconi’s Pizzeria and Miss Philly Grill.

Melanie chose Thomas Jefferson University because the coaches and campus made her feel right at home. Melanie is excited to begin her studies and practices at Thomas Jefferson in the fall of 2018. She is thankful for all of her family, friends, teammates and coaches for motivating and supporting her to reach her full potential. Melanie plans on majoring in health sciences and becoming an occupational therapist after college. Good luck and congratulations Melanie!
