The Murray Avenue Middle School Wrestling team showed up ready to perform at the Montgomery County Middle School wrestling tournament Thursday @ Keith Valley MS. The Philadelphia Eagles parade depleted the Murray Avenue roster from seventeen wrestlers down to seven, but with only seven wrestlers in attendance Murray Avenue let their presence be felt. Derek Mironenko who is a nationally recognized Judo champion, kept his perfect season in tact by pinning all of his opponents in the first round to win the 90 pound weight bracket. 7th grader Alex Kebuz’s only loss came from a state ranked opponent, he didn’t let a loss get in his way of steam rolling through the rest of the competition to take home a 3rd place medal in the 105 pound division. At the 145 pound weight division, Tim Whittle had one tough opponent after another, he never gave up and finished in dominating fashion by pinning his final opponent to take home the 3rd place medal. Tomas Lapeika took home first place by pinning all three of his opponents in the first round in the 185 pound weight division! Murray Avenue has come a long way from their first practice, and proved that hard work pays off! The other three wrestlers who participated and represented Lower Moreland well were Joey Stefurak, Michelle Marti, and Yuki Li. Joey was able to pick up a win. For both Michelle and Yuki it was the girls first year wrestling and coaches came away very impressed with the progress they have made throughout the season.
Overall it was a great season for the Murray Avenue wrestling team, and we look forward to the 8th graders joining the high school team next season.
